GWU and Malta Enterprise trade blows over collective agreement The General Workers Union (GWU) reaffirmed that its only interest is to reach an agreement with Malta Enterprise (ME) over the disputed collective agreement. The union added that the ME management has not accepted the financial demands, which include a change in the grades, made by the union. On Friday, the GWU ordered partial industrial action after its "legitimate requests" were refused by ME's management.  It instructed ME employees not to answer telephone calls and emails and not to carry out the document delivery service. "These changes are needed to make good for the wrong decisions in recruitment taken in the last years which have impacted the corporation's structures," the union said in reaction to a statement issued by ME today. The GWU said it cannot understand ME's claims that job conditions have improved. "On the contrary the conditions have become worse," the GWU said. The union said it cannot comprehend why ME expected the union not to commence an industrial dispute just because the corporation's management is currently undergoing a handing over process. "The union hopes ME does not repeat errors which were committed in the past," the GWU said. "ME cannot expect to be granted perpetual industrial peace considering the wrong decisions being taken." The GWU called on the corporation to understand the unions proposals better and come forward with new financial and structural proposals which are closer to the union's position to resolve the dispute "in ME's employees and clients best interest." Earlier today, ME questioned the motives behind industrial actions announced by the General Workers Union last week. ME said the GWU only called the action after the announcement that the executive chairman was to be replaced. The corporation explained that the text of the new collective agreement was agreed upon more than a month ago, however no agreement was reached over the financial aspect of the package, which was the responsibility of the Collective Bargaining Unit within the Finance Ministry. It said such intentions are "even more disappointing when one considers the better working conditions and opportunities which Malta Enterprise has put in place to its staff and management." ME added that it "remains committed to improve the salaries and conditions of all its workers" including the management and not only the conditions of workers covered by the collective agreement. "The GWU's action are clearly intended to disrupt the services given by the to the clients," ME said.
